More and more recreation providers are charging for use of parks and facilities.  In many cases the annual registration fees are nominal over the course of a year, but if you only use the area once in a while this can make riding expensive.  However, in return you will get usually get better facilities than those that are free.

Areas that require permits or registration often have other rules, such as wearing helmets or hi-viz gear.

Under $100 per year (Individual)

  • Riverhead Forest.  $50 voluntary fee per individual, includes horse gate fee.
  • Woodhill Forest Equestrian Park (WFEP).  $70 per year, plus initial key fee $20 (one off charge for gate key).  Camping fees include an additional charge for non-members for more remote riders.
  • Pae O Te Rangi (ARC) - not sure which category to put this one in as the annual permit is only $50, but they also charge a $250 key bond (refundable on key return)
  • Whitford Forest (Rayonier) - $50 per year

Over $100 per year (Individual)

  • Pony Club memberships (or Adult Ride associated with a pony club). Unfortunately there is no overall pony club membership that gives you access to club grounds.  Each club is run independently and you must join up in order to use most grounds.  Each club will have different fees but most are over $100 pa.  This however, includes riding instruction from the club teachers.
