Free places to ride are fairly scarce, however there are some. Click on the links to view information about a particular location. Even some free places will require you to get a permit, register or may only allow riding during certain times.
- Duder Regional Park (ARC) - Nice little farm ride
- Hunua Regional Park (ARC) - only one trail at present, but it provides a couple of hours riding
- Karekare Beach (ARC) - Restricted times
- Karioitahi Beach (Franklin)
- Muriwai Beach (ARC) - Low Tide Only! Fantastic beach 30kms long, the ARC own the 'Five Mile Block' horse trails.
- Okura - Low Tide Only! Ride the tidal estuary, but stay clear of shorebird breeding grounds.
- Piha Beach (ARC) - Restricted times
- Riverhead Forest (Rayonier) - there is a voluntary registration system and you can ride the firebreaks around the forest for free...
- Totara Park (Manukau) - a couple of bridlepaths weave around Totara Park
- Waiuku Forest (Crown Forests)- This entire forest is free!
- Whitford Beach - Low Tide Only! Ride the tidal estuary, but stay clear of shorebird breeding grounds.
